Avant rock band
Githead features
Malka Spigel (bass, vocals),
Wire's
Colin Newman (guitar, vocals), Robin Rimbaud (aka
Scanner, guitar), and frequent live and studio assistance from Max Franken (drums).
Newman and
Spigel first worked together on the former's 1986 album
Commercial Suicide, while the latter and Franken were members of the under-recognized Israeli post-punk band
Minimal Compact. Initially considered a one-off for the sake of performing at the 2004 tenth anniversary celebration of
Newman and
Spigel's Swim label,
Githead quickly evolved into a full-fledged band. Their first release, the six-track
Headgit EP, was released in early November 2004. Although the album
Profile was issued just over half a year later, the fullness and directness of its songs indicated that the band was merely finding its footing on the debut.
Githead subsequently released material every other year, with
Art Pop and
Landing released, respectively, in 2007 and 2009. All of the band's output has been issued on Swim. ~ Andy Kellman
