Montreal-based singer/songwriter
Peter Sagar makes lonely, R&B-influenced indie pop under the name
Homeshake. While essentially a solo project,
Homeshake has also featured contributions by Mark Goetz, Greg Napier, and
Brad Loughead.
Homeshake's songs are stripped down and sensual, often inspired by smooth soul and R&B but with a lo-fi, home-recorded aesthetic. The project made its proper debut with the guitar-based
In the Shower in 2014. Subsequent albums such as 2019's
Helium incorporated more electronics and experimentation, and 2021's
Under the Weather brought back some of the analog touches of
Sagar's earlier work.
Sagar began recording and digitally releasing
Homeshake songs in 2012, and Fixture Records released his debut cassette, The Homeshake Tape, in early 2013.
Sagar spent much of that year touring and playing guitar with
Mac DeMarco, as well as working on new material. A brief mixtape called Dynamic Meditation, which featured a ten-minute montage of new songs on the A-side and the entire montage played backwards on the B-side, was released in October 2013 by Bad Actors Inc.
Homeshake's debut album,
In the Shower, recorded at Montreal's Drones Club, appeared on Sinderlyn in 2014.
Sagar returned to the Drones Club to record
Homeshake's second proper album, the more electronic
Midnight Snack, which was released in 2015. Continuing in this direction,
Fresh Air followed in 2017.
Homeshake's fourth album,
Helium, appeared in 2019, and unlike
Sagar's previous efforts, it was recorded in his apartment in Montreal. The record's release was preceded by the lead track "Like Mariah."
Under the Weather, the fifth
Homeshake full-length, arrived in 2021. Mixed by
Lucas Nathan (
Jerry Paper), the album's songs reflected on
Sagar's depression and burnout from constant touring. ~ Paul Simpson
