Named after the rebellious heroine of 1976’s sci-fi classic Logan’s Run,
Jessica 6 feature singer Nomi Ruiz, bassist
Andrew Raposo, and keyboardist
Morgan Wiley. The trio met in late 2007 while working with
Hercules and Love Affair on that group’s debut album, and after performing over 100 dates together, they decided to continue working together. Before joining forces, Brooklyn-born Ruiz released a solo album, 2005’s
Lost in Lust, which married her husky alto to hip-hop beats; meanwhile,
Wiley and
Raposo had worked together before in the band
Automato, whose 2004 album was produced by
the DFA's James Murphy and
Tim Goldsworthy. This mix of R&B, disco, and hip-hop -- along with healthy doses of freestyle, funk, punk, and pop -- shaped
Jessica 6's sound. Ruiz brought a song called “Fun Girl” to
Wiley and
Raposo in 2008, which they fleshed out into 2009’s Fun Girl EP; in mid-2011, their full-length album See the Light arrived. ~ Heather Phares
