Originally from Newfoundland, tenor saxophonist
John Nugent burnished his jazz skills during the early to mid-'80s at Sir Francis Xavier University, the Banff School of Fine Arts, and North Texas State University. He soon racked up years of touring experience with the One O'Clock Lab Band and
Woody Herman, in addition to performing with everyone
Ella Fitzgerald and
Mel Torme to
Bob Hope and
the Temptations. As a solo artist,
Nugent has been keeping company with top-notch jazz musicians like
Bruce Barth, Doug Weiss,
David Liebman, and
Billy Hart. In 1994 he founded his own record label/management company, NY Jam. The label released West of Flatbush in 1998 and Rhythmicity in 2000.
Nugent's efforts on other labels include 1996's self-titled
