Matthew Tavares is best known as pianist, keyboardist, and composer for Toronto's
BadBadNotGood, though he also makes soft rock and psychedelia under the moniker Matty.
Tavares has also done production work with
Kendrick Lamar and
Post Malone. He co-founded
BBNG with drummer
Alexander Sowinski in 2010. Their success translated across Canada and Europe. In addition to their own recordings, they collaborated live and on record with rappers
Ghostface Killah,
Tyler, The Creator,
Earl Sweatshirt,
Danny Brown, and others.
After leaving the group due to exhaustion and depression in 2018, he issued the solo soft psych album Deja Vu with producer and ubiquitous sample source
Frank Dukes. It marked a return to the music he had been messing with on home recordings since he was 16 years old. In 2019, he formed a duo with
BBNG saxophonist/multi-instrumentalist
Leland Whitty. In February of the following year, their partnership resulted in the psychedelic spiritual jazz outing
Visions for
Mr. Bongo; their rhythm section included bassist
Julian Anderson-Bowes and drummer
Matthew Chalmers. In early March,
Tavares rejoined
BBNG. ~ Thom Jurek
