Combining the deep, rich vocal styles of gospel and house music with the more radio-friendly song structures found in R&B and indie electronica, London-based singer
Moko quickly rose in 2013 thanks to her single "Freeze." Growing up a church singer in a house full of soul and gospel records,
Moko fronted bands at first, but then launched a solo career after graduating from Goldsmiths University. In 2013 the tracks "Freeze" and "Summon the Strength" appeared online, both promoting the release of her debut EP Black. The EP landed on
Chase & Status' imprint MTA that same year and drew comparisons to classic trip-hop artists like
Tricky and
Massive Attack. ~ David Jeffries
