The effervescent club music of producer
Mousse T (
Mustafa Gündogdu) blends disco and house along with taste and camp into a sparkling mix that has spawned such hits as "Horny" and "Sex Bomb." Born in Hagen, Germany of Turkish decent,
Mustafa moved to Hanover in 1990 to join the band Fun Key B on keyboards, build his own studio, and moonlight as a DJ. In 1993 he formed the label/production house Peppermint Jam with partner
Errol Rennalls. He spent the next few years releasing his own rousing house music and some cool acid jazz on Peppermint Jam 12"s while producing and remixing the likes of
Michael Jackson,
Simply Red,
Amber,
Ziggy Marley,
Boney M, and
Randy Crawford. In 1998 he had his breakthrough hit when "Horny," featuring vocals by the female duo Hot 'N' Juicy, dominated clubs worldwide. While his remix of
Moloko's "Sing It Back" was storming up the charts that same year, "Horny" was appearing on numerous compilations, from Gay Happening, Vol. 6 to Chef Aid: The South Park Album. A year later he teamed with the legendary
Tom Jones for another smash, "Sex Bomb," which would be featured on
Jones' album
Reload. Both "Horny" and "Sex Bomb" would appear in drastically different versions on his jazzy and lounge-flavored album
Gourmet de Funk released in 2002. His 2004 full-length All Nite Madness was introduced by another club hit, "Is It 'Cos I'm Cool?" Two years later "Horny" would invade the dancefloor once again but this time cheeky producers Loo & Placido mashed it together with
the Dandy Warhols' single "Bohemian Like You." Titled "Horny as a Dandy," the cut was another dance compilation favorite. ~ David Jeffries
