Taking the name of a character from
William S. Burroughs' book Naked Lunch,
Mugwump is a Belgian DJ, producer, and party promoter who prefers heavy beats, heavy bass, and heavy reverb. He grew up while his homeland was at the center of the New Beat movement, the somewhat slow, somewhat industrial genre that reached its peak in the late '80s. When
Mugwump began to DJ in the early '90s, his taste changed with the times, as acid house, house, and techno filled his record box. By the early '90s, his DJ gigs were split between the party island of Ibiza and his homeland; then in 1996 he moved back to Belgium to run the Food club. Under
Mugwump's stewardship, Food became an institution. A demanding institution too, as he didn't release his own productions until 2004 when his Mudcleaner 12" appeared on the Suicide Recordings label. He joined the revered Kompakt label in 2008 with the
Meditation EP; then in 2009 he landed on R&S with the Everything Remains 12", followed by the International Deejay Gigolo 12"
Die Nacht Ist Kuhl released that same year. He introduced his own Subfield label in 2014, which a year later became an imprint of the !K7 label with the release of
Unspell,
Mugwump's debut album. ~ David Jeffries
