Regional Mexican music/telenovela star Raúl Sandoval was introduced to listeners and viewers via the first season of TV Azteca's singing competition La Academia. Born January 5, 1979, in the capitol city of Baja California, Mexicali, Sandoval was steeped in the norteño musical tradition. His love of traditional rather than pop-flavored Mexican music would be the dynamic that set him apart from his competitors in 2002 when he graced the stage of La Academia. Over the course of the season, Sandoval's powerful voice and romantic charisma won him the hearts of viewers all over Mexico, as well as interest from a variety of labels. Sandoval signed with Universal Latino for the release of his debut disc, Serenata. The project was a major success, earning Sandoval his first gold record, while announcing a budding star for Universal. Sandoval's 2005 release Perdón Porque featured collaborations with established figures like Pepe Aguilar, José Manuel Figueroa, and Mario Quintero, among others. Sandoval recapped the songs he sang throughout his time on La Academia on his next record, El Desafio de una Estrella, which was released in 2006. Sandoval dedicated himself to national touring shortly thereafter, entertaining audiences across Mexico. This experience gave birth to his fourth release, Mi Otro Camino, capturing the experience of Sandoval live in concert. The album landed a spot on Mexico's Top 100. © Evan C. Gutierrez /TiVo
