An exploratory improviser,
Stefan Bauer's first instrument was the piano which he began playing at age six. When he was 14 he switched to trombone; it was not until 1976 that he became a vibraphonist. In 1978, the German-born
Bauer attended the Berklee College of Music and studied with
David Friedman in New York. Since returning to Germany in 1979,
Bauer has toured extensively throughout Europe and Canada. The vibraphonist has recorded with
the Vienna Art Orchestra,
Peter Erskine, a variety of Europeans and as a leader for ZYX (1992) and Igmod (1996). ~ Scott Yanow
