New York City's
Suffrajett is lo-fi, aggressive, and grooving, but they aren't quite garage rock. The band plays swaggering tunes that are both grimy and soulful, led by the sweet and raw vocals of Simi. Simi, a classically trained singer from Woodstock, NY, and Chicagoan guitarist Jason Chasko, who played with
Liz Phair on
Whitechocolatespaceegg, formed
Suffrajett in 2002. With Kevin Roberts (
Elysian Fields) on bass and Frank Ferrer (
the Psychedelic Furs) on drums, the band brings a touch of glam to their nasty rock strut.
Suffrajett's self-titled debut, a raucous selection of Lower East Side grit with some catchy hooks, was released on In Music We Trust in May of 2003. ~ Charles Spano
