South Korean pianist
Sun-Wook Kim was raised in Seoul and started playing the piano at three. He gave his first solo recital at ten and his first concerto performance at 12.
Kim studied at the Korean National University of Arts, where his teacher was Daejin Kim. At 18, he was the first Asian pianist to win the Leeds International Piano Competition. He was also a winner at the Ettlingen Competition and the Concours Clara Haskil, and he won awards from the Daewon Cultural Foundation and the Kumho Asiana Group. In 2013,
Kim earned his Master of Arts degree at the Royal Academy of Music. Since then, he has performed with the
London Symphony Orchestra, the
London Philharmonic Orchestra, the
Philharmonia Orchestra, the
Hallé Orchestra, the
Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, the
BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the
BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, the
Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the
Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the
Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, the
Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, the
NDR Symphony Orchestra, the
Finnish Radio Symphony, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, and many other major orchestras around the world. As a chamber artist,
Kim has performed with
Alisa Weilerstein,
Guy Braunstein,
Augustin Hadelich,
Jian Wang, and
Nobuko Imai. He was honored in 2013 by the Beethoven House in Bonn as the first participant in its mentoring program.
