Not a supergroup so much as an American black metal summit gathering, the
Twilight project brings together some of the major players in the most extreme faction of this most extreme of genres. Specifically, here you'll find
Leviathan and
Lurker of Chalice mastermind Wrest, Malefic of
Xasthur, Imperial of
Krieg, Azentrius of
Nachtmystium, and Hildolf of Draguar -- all of them multi-instrumentalists normally given to working in solitude. This rogue's gallery of malevolent metal talent brought their might to bear for their self-titled 2005 debut,
Twilight. The band disbanded briefly in 2008, with Malefic and Hildolf leaving the band, but re-formed in 2009 with a new class of post-metal luminaries stepping in to fill the void. Bolstered by the addition of
Isis'
Aaron Turner,
the Atlas Moth's
Stavros Giannopoulos, and
Minsk's
Sanford Parker, the band set to work on new material, eventually releasing its second album,
Monument to Time End, through Southern Lord in 2010. Two years later, the unstoppable talent-collecting juggernaut announced that none other than
Thurston Moore would be joining the band. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia & Gregory Heaney
