Born in rural New York State in the early '60s, Mark Gage (aka
Vapourspace, Cusp) grew interested in electronic music of all kinds while growing up. He began recording in 1983, though his first release didn't appear until over ten years later. Now based in Rochester, Gage called Plus 8 label-head Richie Hawtin (aka
Plastikman) and eventually signed a contract. His "Gravitational Arch of 10" debut was well-received, as was a U.S. tour with
Orbital,
Moby and
the Aphex Twin during 1993. Themes from Vapourspace was a very mature debut album -- unsurprising, given Gage's recording experience. He followed it up with Sweep in 1997. His Cusp project (closer to straightahead techno) has released several singles, including "Drone Um Futurisma," and Gage has also remixed
Juno Reactor,
Pressure of Speech, FUSE and
