Wally Ngonda

Wally Ngonda

Congolese singer

Formerly the guitarist (and latter-day leader) of Zairean rumba group Anti-Choc, Wally Ngonda released his first solo album in 1995. This returned to the roots of African rumba, though its modern recording and presentation gave the songs a more reflective air. Featuring additional guitar playing from Azulino and guest vocals from Sam Mangwana on the title track, elsewhere Ngonda himself dominated proceedings. The rhythms remained as infectious as they had been with Anti-Choc, but the sombre delivery and space within the recordings greatly enhanced its impact.
