The New York-based Peruvian folk group Wayno is a successor to long-established outfits such Los Incas (most famous for their collaborations with
Simon and Garfunkel and
Paul Simon). The principal members, Luis Vilcherrez and Marco Covenas, who compose and produce the group's work, hail -- as do the other members -- from northern Peru, and it is there that their repertory originates. As with many other ethnic and folk music groups in the 1990s, Wayno has produced its own recordings for release at concerts, available through Vilcherrez directly (24-19 21st St., Astoria, NY 11102, 718-278-8777). ~ Bruce Eder
