Les rumeurs allaient bon train : hibernation définitive voire même maladie incurable et puis non, David Bowie a fait un flamboyant comeback, en 2013, avec l’album The Next Day. A peine le temps de totalement digérer ce disque que Ziggy remet déjà le couvert avec ce fascinant Blackstar, son 25e album studio qu'il publie le jour même de son 69e anniversaire ! 48 heures plus tard, le choc est total et on apprend la mort de l'artiste, emporté par un cancer contre lequel il luttait depuis 18 mois... Avec ce testament Blackstar, une fois de plus est-on tenté de dire, Bowie surprend et épate avec une œuvre expérimentale des plus audacieuses et assez protéiforme (on pense parfois à l’époque Station To Station/Low). Un bel ovni musical qu'il a conçu avec de brillants jazzmen new-yorkais (notamment Maria Schneider et son orchestre mais aussi le guitariste Ben Monder et le saxophoniste Donny McCaslin) sans oublier son fidèle Tony Visconti, derrière la console pour produire cette belle étoile noire.
