Jacobus Clemens non Papa was a major light of the Renaissance whose personal life was not of the norm concerning sixteenth-century sacred musicians; one contemporary report records that Clemens was "a great drunkard who leads a bad life." Even if so, his music as a composer doesn't show it; Clemens' prodigious output contains some of the most flexible, beautiful, and ingeniously conceived music to be found in the period just prior to the rise of Orlande de Lassus. However, interest in recording Clemens has been slow to emerge. This Arsis Audio release is part of a long series of medieval and Renaissance recordings made by the Choir of the Church of the Advent, Boston, under its longtime director, Edith Ho. This particular disc, Music by Jacobus Clemens non Papa, is to some extent a collaborative effort, as the Choir's associate conductor Ross Wood leads three of its tracks. Recorded in 2006 at the Choir's home base of the Church of the Advent, it is a slightly distant but spacious recording; the choral singing is excellent. Clemens' 15 masses are the part of his output that heretofore have received the least attention among his output, and this is the first recording ever of Clemens' Missa Gaude lux Donatiane, three of the motets featured here, likewise, have never appeared on disc before. Enthusiasts of the Renaissance and of Clemens in particular will find this disc highly desirable. From a purely musical standpoint, nothing about Arsis Audio's Music by Jacobus Clemens non Papa is disappointing or seems served in short measure.
