If you don't expect too much, you won't be too disappointed.
Sure, for those for whom only the very greatest music by the very greatest composers will do; for those for whom only the late Haydn, early Beethoven, and any Mozart will do; for those for whom Mozart's last ten piano concerts, Beethoven's first three piano concerts, and Haydn's two, only two piano concertos will do, and Giovanni Paisello's piano concertos will never do. On this disc of his Second and Fourth concertos featuring pianist
Francesco Nicolosi with Gennaro Cappabianca conducting the Collegium Philharmonicum Chamber Orchestra of Naples, Paisello comes off as amiable but not witty, bright but not brilliant, talented but not gifted, and nowhere near Mozart's concertos in level of inspiration. This is not to say that Paisello does not have his charms. His melodies are humable, if not memorable. His harmonies are sticky if not sweet. His solo writing is virtuosic if not virtuous. And this is not to say that the performance does not have its charms.
Nicolosi sparkles and glitters in the role of the soloist, Cappabianca is light but firm as the conductor, and the orchestra is strong but sensitive as the accompaniment. But sparkling and light as their performance is, it still has to shine through the plexiglass that is Paisello's music. Naxos' sound is almost but not quite as good as the major labels. It is clean, but not quite clear.
