This techno rock/industrial band was formed in Bremen, Germany, in 1993, originally as Crashcat. By the beginning of 1995 Heiko Grien (vocals), Markus Gronostay (guitar), Raphael Kraft (guitar) and Dietmar Popke (drums) had changed their name to 44xes - pronounced ‘forty-four excess’. Their first concert together came at an Amsterdam festival, performing in front of a mixed audience of punks, industrial and metal fans. After the release of their debut mini-album in 1995, boasting a punishing sound reminiscent of a more restrained Nine Inch Nails, they embarked on touring dates with Shihad.
