The music of Canadian singer/songwriter
Aidan Knight has a cathartic effect, with his brand of experimental indie folk acting as a container for his own struggles and issues, which permeate throughout his albums, from 2010's Versicolour through to 2020's eponymously titled
Aidan Knight.
Born and raised in Victoria, British Columbia,
Knight became a regular of the local scene, playing in numerous bands before branching out on his own with the release of his debut 2008 single, "First Takes." Over the next two years, he recorded what would become his debut album, 2010's Versicolour, while also playing a host of live dates with the likes of
Dan Mangan and
Said the Whale.
Knight's sophomore long-player,
Small Reveal, appeared in late 2012. More live dates followed, with
Knight taking in tours of the U.S. and Europe alongside artists such as
James Vincent Morrow and
Justin Rutledge. Inking a deal with U.K. label
Full Time Hobby,
Knight issued his third album,
Each Other, in 2016. A move to Berlin followed after the release of the record, and then he returned with his wife to Vancouver Island to set up his own home studio. With family taking precedence -- including the birth of his son -- his songwriting took influence from the ups and down of life, eventually culminating in the release of his eponymously titled fourth LP. Preceded by the single "Sixteen Stares", the album appeared in late 2020, once again via
Full Time Hobby. ~ Rich Wilson
