Norwegian songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist
Alexander von Mehren was born in 1984 and grew up studying classical piano. By his teenage years he was already writing songs and learning how to play various instruments. While enrolled at the University of Bergen in a second-language linguistics program,
von Mehren began work on what would eventually become his debut album,
Aéropop. Though some songs for the record were written as early as 2001 (when he was still just 16), the intricate and meticulous recording process stretched from 2005 to 2012 and would include contributions from members of
Orwell,
Jaga Jazzist, and
the High Llamas. While working on his album of airy, orchestrated pop highly inspired by '60s and '70s library music,
von Mehren would also contribute to arrangements and recordings for peers and friends such as
Chris Joss,
Young Dreams, and
Sondre Lerche.
Aéropop finally saw international release in 2013. After a busy year spent producing O. Martin's Silence Fiction and playing on
Sondre Lerche's
Please album,
von Mehren's next release was
Aéropop Revisited, an EP of remixes of songs from albums by the likes of
Orwell and members of
Stereolab. ~ Fred Thomas
