One of an increasing number of Asian bands attempting to replicate the sounds of imported American heavy metal during the mid-90s, Malaysia’s Alienoid performed entirely in Cantonese. Influenced in the main by the Beyond and China’s Tang Dynasty, the band was first spotted in 1994 at the Guinness-sponsored Canto-Rock Contest. The impression they made there led to a recording contract through Eric Yeoh of PolyGram Records. Together with two other contemporary Malaysian rock bands, Barabastelles and Baby Amps, Alienoid made their debut on the compilation album Canto-Rock Kaki, released in 1995. Its success prompted the record label to issue Alienoid’s self-titled debut the following year. © TiVo
