Antônio Meneses is a Brazilian cellist. Coming from a musical family, he took up the cello at age 10. A meeting with cellist Antonio Janigro led Meneses to participate in classes in Dusseldorf and Stuttgart. He won first prize in the ARD International Competition in Munich, 1977, and followed that by winning the first prize and the gold medal in the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, 1982. He has performed as soloist with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, and the New York Philharmonic, among other world-lass orchestras. As a chamber musician, Meneses has collaborated with the Emerson Quartet, the Vermeer Quartet, and the Belcea Quartet, and performed in recitals with pianists Nelson Freire, Menahem Pressler, Cristina Ortiz, and Gérard Wyss. Since 1998 he has been a member of the Beaux Arts Trio, and plays an Alessandro Gagliano cello, ca. 1730.
