Badge Epoch is a solo alias of Max Turnbull, a Canadian musician best known for making off-kilter pop as Slim Twig and regularly collaborating with U.S. Girls. Spun off from the larger Badge Époque Ensemble, which blends psychedelic rock, funk, and jazz, his work as Badge Epoch additionally bears the influence of library music, ambient techno, hip-hop, and other genres. After releasing four Badge Époque Ensemble records between 2019 and 2021, Badge Epoch debuted with the double LP Scroll.
Turnbull began making music as Slim Twig during the mid-2000s, evolving his sound from dissonant punk blues to heavy psych-pop. He married Meg Remy of U.S. Girls and frequently contributed to her albums. He formed other projects such as Tropics, Darlene Shrugg, and the Cosmic Range, a group who blend electric jazz, Afro-funk, and synth-heavy psychedelia. The Cosmic Range's debut LP, The Gratitude Principle, appeared in 2016. Turnbull then founded Badge Époque Ensemble, a funk-influenced, mainly instrumental group with an entirely different lineup. They issued their self-titled debut in 2019, then released two full-lengths and an EP on Telephone Explosion. In August of 2021, the same label released Scroll, a more experimental double LP Turnbull recorded as Badge Epoch, featuring musicians from both the Cosmic Range and Badge Époque Ensemble. ~ Paul Simpson
