Dublin-born, Los Angeles-based musician
Bren Holmes began his career in the 1990s as the bassist for stalwart Celtic rock outfit
the Young Dubliners. After three decades with the group, he struck out on his own and released the 2021 solo album
Everything You Never Wanted.
In the late '80s,
Holmes joined fellow Irish expats
Keith Roberts and
Paul O'Toole to form
the Young Dubliners. Putting their own stamp on Irish music, they followed
the Pogues' model of bringing a rock and punk feel to both traditional and original songs. They were also among the earliest of the American Celtic rock bands, preceding better-known artists like
the Dropkick Murphys and
Flogging Molly by nearly a decade. During his multi-decade run playing bass with
the Young Dubliners,
Holmes quietly amassed a significant amount of his own material. Feeling that the time was right to make a break, he left the band in 2020 and began recording his first solo album. As a singer/songwriter,
Holmes blends some of the Irish folk-rock style of his previous band with Americana influences.
