Fatima Camara produces hazy, introspective electronic songs marked by shivering bass, downtempo beats, and submerged vocals, as heard on her 2016 full-length
Before We Sleep. In addition to her solo work, she has also worked with techno producers such as
Dapayk Solo and
Deadbeat.
Camara was born in Canada and grew up in a large Portuguese family in Toronto. Following an early interest in new wave and folk, she got into electronic music as a teenager, and began promoting events and DJing. She moved to Berlin in 2008, where she began making music and teaching children how to use electronic instruments and programs. She made guest appearances on tracks by techno producers
Marcel Knopf ("Crazy About," 2009) and
Dapayk Solo (2010's "Back to Me" and the following year's "Still Believe"), additionally releasing the song "When the Night Falls" (with
Bustler) in 2011.
Camara's debut album, a bleary collection of post-punk-influenced downtempo tracks titled
Before We Sleep, was released by Parachute Records in 2016.
Camara contributed music to various independent films, and with dub-techno producer
Deadbeat, she recorded a full interpretation of
Cowboy Junkies' 1988 breakthrough
The Trinity Session, commemorating its 30th anniversary. Titled Trinity Thirty, it was released by Constellation Records in April 2019. ~ Paul Simpson
