Along with a solo career as an Americana singer/songwriter,
Chris Maxwell is also half of the production duo Elegant Too. Hailing from Little Rock, Arkansas,
Maxwell's musical career began in the early '80s with the group Jubilee Dive. His next band, the Southern alt-pop band the Gunbunnies, released the 1990 album Paw Paw Patch, which was produced by
Jim Dickinson, who also worked with
Big Star,
the Replacements, and
the Rolling Stones. After the group disbanded,
Maxwell founded the junk-rock outfit
Skeleton Key in 1994 with former
Lounge Lizards bassist
Erik Sanko. He left the group in the late '90s and formed Elegant Too with
Phil Hernandez in 1998. Over the years, the pair took on production, songwriting, and composition jobs for clients as wide-ranging as
They Might Be Giants,
Iggy Pop,
Yoko Ono, and the television shows Inside Amy Schumer and Bob's Burgers. In 2012, they won a Clio Award for their music to the Gillette commercial "The Gentleman Shaver." In 2016,
Maxwell released his solo debut album, Arkansas Summer. The following year, Catskill Christmas, a collaboration with
Holly Miranda and
Shivaree's
Ambrosia Parsley, arrived via Dangerbird Records. ~ Heather Phares
