Dan Cross was born and raised in Ancaster, Ontario, Canada, a small town not far from Toronto. After high school, Dan attended Humber College in Toronto, enrolling in their Jazz Studies program as a guitarist. Transferring the following year, Dan continued studying jazz guitar at Mohawk College under the tutiledge of Lorne Lofsky, and later, Reg Schwager. It was at Mohawk College that Dan also began writing music for large jazz orchestra, under the supervision of Juno Award-winning arranger Dave McMurdo.
After graduating from Mohawk College, Dan continued his focus on writing, and studying the tradition of jazz guitar. Dan was invited to attend the IAJE jazz festival in New York City in January of 1998, performing with flugelhornist
Guido Basso and the Hamilton All Star Jazz Band. His arrangements have been referred to as "smoldering...taking the All Stars into some dark and unexplored territory", by View Magazine.
Dan's career in jazz writing began with the launch of his jazz-based website, Central Park North, in April of 1997. His album reviews have been quoted by numerous sources throughout the internet, and his letters have been published by Downbeat magazine.
