Before moving to Brooklyn in 2011, the members of indie rock trio
Daytona all played music together in college music Mecca Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Migrating separately, guitarist Hunter Simpson (also a member of Brooklyn folk/punk band
Wild Yaks), bassist Jose Boyer, and drummer Christopher Lauderdale reconnected in New York and began gigging and recording as
Daytona. Marrying African and Caribbean rhythms with a melodic post-rock sound, the group released their first EP, Storm So Long, in 2012 before signing with the Ernest Jenning Record Company later that year. Teaming up with producer and Chapel Hill native Ari Picker of
Lost in the Trees,
Daytona recorded their self-titled debut LP, which came out in late 2013. ~ Timothy Monger
