Deadweight

Deadweight

* En anglais uniquement

A trio comprising singer/violinist Ben Barnes, cellist Sam Bass -- both trained at the San Francisco Conservatory -- and drummer Paulo Baldi, deadweight somehow manage to attain a sound more equivalent to a Mac truck being driven over your feet than a Baroque pop trio. Bass' cello can sound meaner and growl more furiously than any electric bass imaginable, and Barnes' violin runs around like a less-indulgent Adrian Belew. This is diverse, intense music appropriate for dancing, slamming, or just sitting back and listening. They'll just as soon do a cover of "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" as they'll play a song that leaves you wondering just how many Primus and Jane's Addiction albums they've studiously absorbed. To further the intrigue -- or perhaps just to frustrate critics -- deadweight don't stop there: the classical training received by Barnes and Bass, as well as the awe-inspiring skill and tightness within Baldi's playing, allows them to delve into faux Contemporary Classical (Bartok meets Crimson) or straight-up, deliciously hook-laden pop with equal dexterity.
