Understated vocals and mellow productions belie the open-hearted nature of R&B-inspired pop artist
Drama Relax, an Interscope signee whose slew of 2019 singles included the
Jeremih collaboration "All That."
Long Island native John Sammis rapped as a youngster for fun. Near the end of the 2000s, he started to take music seriously and eventually made a name for himself under the alias Johnny Drama. Affected most by the spiraling melodies and collected demeanor of
Chief Keef,
Travis Scott, and
Rae Sremmurd, he steadily progressed with a series of recordings through J $tash's Relax Rekords. Signed to Interscope, Sammis renamed himself
Drama Relax and hewed to pop flavored with R&B, emphasizing his singing voice with increasingly vulnerable lyrics. In 2019, he made his commercial major-label debut with "Private," and through the end of the year issued a few more singles, most notably "Your Love" (featuring
Tory Lanez and
Lil Tjay) and the more trap-styled "All That" (featuring
Jeremih). ~ Andy Kellman
