Limp Bizkit frontman
Fred Durst was born on August 8th, 1970 in Jacksonville, FL and raised in Gastonia, NC. After high school he served a stint in the U.S. Navy before returning to Jacksonville at age 20 to pursue a career as a tattoo artist. In late 1994
Durst co-founded the rap-metal band
Limp Bizkit with bassist
Sam Rivers; championed by their friends in
Korn, word of mouth publicity helped land the group a spot on tour with
House of Pain and
the Deftones, and following an intense bidding war,
Limp Bizkit signed with Flip/Interscope to issue their debut album
Three Dollar Bill Y'All in 1997. Thanks to a hit cover of
George Michael's "Faith," the record steadily rose up the charts, and the band also appeared on 1998's inaugural Family Values tour; the buzz helped
Limp Bizkit's second album,
Significant Other, debut at number one in mid-1999. ~ Jason Ankeny
