The soft, jangly, shambling pop sounds of Melbourne, Australia quartet
Full Ugly began as low-key collaborations between Michael Caterer and songwriter Nathan Burgess. The two were already playing together in the more eclectic outfit
Love Connection at the time, and slowly began working on
Full Ugly tunes. The band was rounded out with the inclusion of Thomas Mendelovits and Zach Schneider and they began playing out live and preparing recordings. Caterer eventually relocated from Australia to the States, but the band soldiered on without him, Burgess recruiting a replacement and recording a bevy of tunes with the original line-up before Caterer departed for New York in 2011. Their first public output included a track on the 2012 compilation Rough End of the Stick on Vacant Valley Records, as well as a song on a four-way split 7" including like-minded Aussie band
the Stevens. 2013 saw the release of the Drove Down 7", foreshadowing the release of debut LP
Spent the Afternoon, issued in the spring of 2014 on the Bedroom Suck label. ~ Fred Thomas
