Playing music that's sweet and hard-edged at the same time,
Hadda Be are a British indie rock band whose guitar-driven approach is founded on equal parts of jangle and crunch. With melodies informed by indie pop sheen and post-punk angst,
Hadda Be's work has a fresh and organic tone that's a fine match for the expressive but matter-of-fact delivery of vocalist Amber Rose Price and her tales of the unexpected turns of ordinary life.
Hadda Be first mapped out the coordinates of their sound on their self-titled 2019 EP they released under the name Foundlings, while 2021's album Another Life was a lean but powerful set that reflected the difficult times that witnessed its creation
Based jointly in South London and Brighton, the group was founded in 2018 as Foundlings with Amber Rose Price on lead vocals, Matthew Sykes on guitar, Bryan Ong on bass, and Oliver Trowler-Wareham on drums and backing vocals. In their first year, Foundlings issued a pair of independent singles, "Misery" and "Horizon," which won positive reviews and radio airplay on BBC Radio 6 as well as Radio X. The U.K. label Last Night from Glasgow was impressed with Foundlings, and they struck a deal with the group, releasing a five-songself-titled EP in March 2019. The band toured in support of the EP to enthusiastic audiences, but as good as 2019 had been, 2020 brought them a wealth of challenges. Bassist Bryan Ong left the band and was replaced by Ben Richards. The group struggled with the political fallout of Brexit, and the Covid-19 pandemic upended their recording and touring plans. And Foundlings were faced with a possible lawsuit when they were contacted by representatives of an American band who were already using that name. They dealt with the latter crisis by changing their name to
Hadda Be, the handle taken from a poem by
Allen Ginsberg.
Hadda Be spent five days at Brighton Road Recording Studios and were able to cut the 11 songs that would comprise their first full-length release. Another Life was issued by Last Night from Glasgow in April 2021. ~ Mark Deming
