Born in Brooklyn, New York, 23 year old rapper, singer and producer Haleek Maul was sent to the island of Barbados at a young age to attend school and be raised outside the city.
Inspired by the sounds that filled his childhood environment, he began creating music while in secondary school, and what started off as innocent rhyming and mimicry of his favourite artists became an obsession which led him to pursue production and greater musical exploration.
Formative influences on his style include Vybz Kartel, Damon Albarn, Aphex Twin, Tricky, Crystal Castles and Kanye West.
Haleek Maul first surfaced in 2012 aged just 16 with the critically acclaimed ‘Oxyconteen’ EP, which showcased a rare talent, wise beyond his years. This was followed by collaborations with Supreme Cuts, Ryan Hemsworth, Le1f and others. In 2015 he dropped the full length ‘Prince Midas’ mixtape, featuring Saul Williams and produced by Shy Guy, Dubbel Dutch, WIFE, Last Japan, Black Noi$e, Cubby and Maul himself.
He later signed with Lex Records (MF DOOM, MIKE, BADBADNOTGOOD & Ghostface Killah) and released 2018’s ‘In Permanence’ EP, featuring Saul Williams and Embaci, and produced by GILA, D Tiberio & Dasychira.
Recent single ‘Ceiling Fan’, produced by Morris (Kelela, Le1f), found him opening a new musical chapter. The track channels his multi-cultural background as he alternates between technical raps and fleeting moments of Caribbean vocal rhythms. ‘Ceiling Fan’ was followed by the haunting ‘Halo’, a collaboration with Chicago’s Mick Jenkins, ‘Abyss’ featuring like minded NYC maverick Ro Ransom, and the reflective ‘Lucid’ featuring Kanye collaborator Sean Leon. These tracks offers an indication of the new sounds Haleek is exploring on his forthcoming debut album, due for release February 2020 on Lex.
