Citing jazz, classic soul, and '90s dream pop among their influences,
Honeyglaze's eccentric, post-punk- and lounge-inflected indie rock is the brainchild of singer and songwriter Anouska Sokolow. With Sokolow's songs in hand, the band formed in South London in 2020, joined the Speedy Wunderground roster, and emerged with their debut LP,
Honeyglaze, in 2022.
Anouska Sokolow formed
Honeyglaze to avoid playing her residency at The Windmill -- a Brixton pub and music venue by then at the center of the South London post-punk revival scene -- solo. She didn't meet bassist Tim Curtis and drummer
Yuri Shibuichi until their first rehearsal just three days before their first scheduled show. The COVID-19 pandemic then locked down venues, and it would be another year before they made up for lost time with a string of performances including festival dates at Green Man, Live at Leeds, and Sŵn Festival. In the meantime, they signed with Speedy Wunderground and recorded their debut album in April 2021 with label runner
Dan Carey and Alexis Smith producing.
Honeyglaze's first single, the
Charles Bukowski-inspired "Burglar," saw release in September 2021. The full-length
Honeyglaze followed the next April, accompanied by a tour of the U.K. and Ireland. ~ Marcy Donelson
