Imhotep is a musician, mixer, beatmaker, songwriter and producer from Marseille, France. In addition to his solo work including albums Blue Print and Kheper and producing of other artists, he was one of the founding members of the Marseille rap group IAM.
Imhotep, having affinity to a number of versatile musical genres from the start, played different instruments in formations with blues, rock, funk, and reggae influences. Evolving from reggae-dub to digital and dance-hall, he aproached electronic music in the mid 80’s and became a pioneer of hip-hop beat-making in France in 1987.
In 1989, he co-founded IAM adopting the name of the historic egyptian character Imhotep, alongside Akhenaton, Shurik’n Chang-Ti, Kheops and Kephren. Imhotep has major responsibilities in developing the IAM sound and using of mediterranean and asiatic samples in beat-making. IAM, considered one of the best in French hip-hop music, is the only french rap band still in activity for more than 30 years.
