Andersen learned the flute from his father, Christian J. Andersen. Karl Andersen played with The Copenhagen Royal Orchestra and later was a founder- member of The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. After his career as a flautist ended because of an illness of the tongue he returned to Copenhagen to conduct The Palace Orchestra. In addition to his work as a flautist and conductor, Andersen composed concert pieces for flute and orchestra, as well as forty-eight studies for the flute.
