Joe Friedman is originally from St. Louis. He picked up the guitar at a very young age, doing recording sessions by age ten and performing in public at 13. During a summer at the Interlochen Music Camp in Michigan he met and studied with Bob Ferrazza, then went to the Oberlin Conservatory, continuing with Ferrazza and Jimmy Ponder and winning a dean's talent scholarship. Upon moving to New York City, he was subsequently tutored there by guitar masters Rodney Jones and Paul Bollenback. Since club dating in the Big Apple, he has toured extensively with Eartha Kitt; collaborated with his main influence, George Benson, in a tribute to organist Brother Jack McDuff; and been in combos with organists Sam Yahel and Mike LeDonne. In the short span of his life he has worked with Eddie Daniels, Norman Simmons, Ruth Brown, Vanessa Rubin, Robin Eubanks, Winard Harper, and the Rockettes, and done Broadway musicals. In 2007 he appeared on the CBS-TV series Love Monkey, recorded as a studio sideman for various pop and rock groups, and composed music for the NASCAR Nextel Cup racing program. © Michael G.
