All of this now-defunct quartet's members have better-known recordings, but their playing here is inspired nonetheless. Phil Haynes' unpredictable stop-start drumming and Drew Gress' huge bass tones provide a shifting foundation for the fractured melodies and intense solos of high-note blower Paul Smoker (trumpet) and honking bar-walker-turned-inside-out Ellery Eskelin (tenor sax).
