Jazz drummer Keshav Batish is known for blending his multidimensional post-bop jazz with Hindustani and North Indian Classical musical traditions. Batish released his debut album, Binaries in Cycle, in 2021.
A California native, Batish grew up in a musical family the son of noted sitar player Pandit Ashwin Batish and grandson of singer Shiv Dayal Batish. From a young age, he played sitar and tabla with his father and eventually took up the drum set. As a teenager, he discovered jazz while a student at the Pacific Collegiate School. He then attended University of California, Santa Cruz where he studied European classical music and pursued his Master's in Composition. Along the way, he formed his own group, bringing together longtime friends pianist Lucas Hahn and bassist Aron Caceras. The group's sound was solidified with the addition of Israeli-born alto saxophonist Shay Salhov. In 2021, Batish showcased his ensemble with Binaries in Cycle, which he recorded as part of the Santa Cruz-based Kuumbwa Jazz Center's virtual performance series. ~ Matt Collar
