By the time she formed the group
Knife Pleats in 2014,
Rose Melberg had already staked her place in the history of indie pop by being in some of the genre's best bands (
the Softies,
Tiger Trap) and some really good ones too, like
Gaze,
Go Sailor, and
Brave Irene. She also released a batch of first-rate solo albums for good measure. When
Knife Pleats started, it had been a few years since
Melberg had been in a group and she had a backlog of uptempo songs demoed and ready to go. She joined up with two members of Vancouver band
Love Cuts, Kaity McWhinney and Tracey Vath, and drummer Gregor Phillips, and the band began rehearsing, then playing shows around town. They hit the studio in April and May of 2015, working with
David Carswell at JC/DC and at Phillips' home. The resulting album,
Hat Bark Beach, was a sharp blast of noisy and sweet pop, clocking in at a brisk 27 minutes. It was released in late 2015 by Lost Sound Tapes in North America (LP and cassette), WIAIWYA in the U.K. (LP), and Jigsaw Records (CD). ~ Tim Sendra
