Lemuel Jones is known for two field recordings he did for
John Lomax at the state penitentiary in Richmond, VA, on May 31, 1936.
Jones did unaccompanied vocal versions of a Depression-era protest song called "Po' Farmers (Poor Farmers)" and a blues entitled "Shake It, Mama," and also sang as part of a unison vocal group behind fellow inmate James Wilson on a call-and-response work song called "Can't You Line 'Em," which
Lomax recorded the same day. ~ Steve Leggett
