Look Park is a project of
Chris Collingwood, lead singer and co-songwriter of power pop group
Fountains of Wayne, his first outside of the band. Though technically a solo affair, it steers clear of singer/songwriter and D.I.Y. fare, instead embracing a psych-pop sound that the musician labeled as "band music."
Named after a park in
Collingwood's base of Northampton, Massachusetts,
Look Park began to take form when
Fountains of Wayne returned from a world tour in support of their 2011 album,
Sky Full of Holes.
Collingwood wrote some songs on his own, and decided to deliberately abandon any that he thought sounded like his group. On the demos, he focused on acoustic guitar, piano, and limited percussion. The songwriter then reached out to celebrated producer
Mitchell Froom (
Elvis Costello,
Randy Newman,
Bonnie Raitt). The two learned that they had attended the same boarding school in Pennsylvania, and shared interests including a love of
the Moody Blues. They went on to devise a psychedelic palette, including hazy keyboards and Mellotron, for the songs. In 2015,
Collingwood gathered bassist
Davey Faragher and drummer
Michael Urbano, both former members of
Cracker, in
Froom's home studio in Santa Monica, California to record.
Look Park's eponymous debut arrived via Yep Roc in the summer of 2016. ~ Marcy Donelson
