A good, occasionally exceptional pianist, whose albums have not adequately reflected his evolution and growth, Makoto Ozone is still maturing as a pianist. His solos in live performance have been sharper, more creative and invigorating than those on his albums, which have leaned toward the introspective and polite. Ozone began teaching himself piano at five, then started formal studies at 12. He attended Berklee in the early '80s, and worked closely with Gary Burton, as well as thoroughly studying Chick Corea's music. He joined Burton's band after graduation, and also did solo concerts. He made his Columbia debut playing with Burton and Eddie Gomez in the mid-'80s. Ozone's since recorded for GRP. He has sessions available on CD.
