Mattia Trani is an Italian techno artist whose spacy, futuristic productions pay clear reverence to the Motor City, as he refers to himself as a "student of the Detroit techno school." His recordings range from loud, stripped-down warehouse techno to jazzy explorations to acid electro, and even a few drum'n'bass tracks that could've been released on Reinforced or Metalheadz circa 1995.
Trani founded Bologna-based label PushMaster Discs in 2012, and began releasing 12"s by himself as well as other Detroit-inspired Italian techno producers such as
Ilario Alicante and Percyl. The releases caught the attention of techno DJs worldwide, ranging from Detroit legends
Jeff Mills and
Derrick May to Europeans such as
Ben Klock and
DJ Deep. In 2014,
Trani became the first Italian DJ to record a mix for Detroit collective
Underground Resistance's online radio station, and Detroit producers including
Claude Young and Santiago Salazar (Los Hermanos) remixed
Trani's tracks. In 2016,
Trani's single "313 Times" included a remix by techno originator
Juan Atkins, and its B-side, "Kinstugi," was reworked by
DJ Stingray of
Urban Tribe.
Trani's full-length debut,
The Hi-Tech Mission, also appeared in 2016. ~ Paul Simpson
