The duo of
Lily Konigsberg (
Palberta) and
Nate Amos (
Water from Your Eyes) started challenging each other to "mess with different sounds" in 2020 and became fast friends as they compiled some of the resulting quirky, multi-genre-referencing indie pop songs on
That's My Idea, their 2021 debut EP under the moniker
My Idea. While remaining in their bands and, in the case of
Konigsberg, releasing solo material, the productive songwriters followed it nine months later with the full-length
Cry Mfer.
The pair first met when
Konigsberg approached
Amos -- by then producer of albums for
Dark Tea and Thanks for Coming as well as for
Water from Your Eyes -- about producing her solo debut. He said yes, and
Lily We Need to Talk Now was released in October 2021. Their bands
Palberta and
Water from Your Eyes also put out albums that year (
Palberta5000 and
Structure, respectively). In the meantime, the two of them formed a tempestuous, briefly romantic friendship involving competitive songwriting, heartbreak, sobriety, and more that produced dozens of songs. After signing with Hardly Art, the duo released five of them amidst the frenzy of other releases in 2021 on a July EP titled
That's My Idea. Sharing songwriting and producing credit, they followed it up with the debut album
Cry Mfer in April 2022, also on Hardly Art. ~ Marcy Donelson
