Nana Yamato freely combines the influence of various contrasting styles and sounds for her synthesis of electronic bedroom production and indie-inspired songwriting. After releasing a few songs under the ANNA moniker,
Yamato used her own name for her 2021 debut of multicolored melodic pop,
Before Sunrise.
Yamato grew up in Tokyo and was first inspired to work on music as a teenager when she bought an
Iceage record and was enthralled by their raw punk sounds. She began working on her own music after school, exploring MIDI programming and beatmaking for her first original songs. Around 2017, she started releasing music as ANNA, putting out several singles on the Tokyo label Big Love Records over the next several years. At some point,
Yamato's music caught the attention of
Parquet Courts'
Andrew Savage, who signed the artist to his Dull Tools label. Dull Tools released
Yamato's first music under her own name with 2021's
Before Sunrise, a collection of dreamy, homespun songs created during the quarantine lockdowns during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. ~ Fred Thomas
