Something of a missing link between early country blues singing women like Elizabeth Cotten and the more polished heroines of '60s folk like Joni Mitchell, Niela Miller recorded her lone album, SONGS OF LEAVING in 1962. Picking easy but haunting blues riffs and warbling in a high register, Miller lurked in Greenwich Village's shadows, but offered one monumental contribution to pop culture: her song "Baby Don't Go To Town" became the blueprint for "Hey Joe," one of rock's most oft-covered anthems and a song credited to her boyfriend, Billy Roberts. © TiVo
